The first thing you should do is find one of the major banks in Rome. There are plenty. You’ll find even more local banks around. However, these local banks are not your best option because they may charge more than those of major banks.

If you need to exchange US dollars, look around to find out the best daily rate of exchange because it fluctuates constantly.
Here is a list of major banks.

1. Unicredit
2. Intesa Sanpaolo
3. BNL – Banca Nazional del Lavoro
4. Banca Monte Dei Paschi Di Siena
5. UBI Banca
6. Banca Nazionale Del lavoro – BNP Paribas
7. Banca Popolare Di Sondrio
8. BCC – Banca di Credito Cooperativo
9. Crédit Agricole Italia
10. Banca Sella

Important
Most banks are only open during the weekdays anywhere from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm and then from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Be aware of public holidays for these days drastically change the opening/closing hours.

In Italy, ATMs are known as Bancomats. Bancomats operate the same as ATMs in America so they should be easy to follow. There’s usually a language choice at the very beginning to change to English for those that don’t know any Italian!

Please contact your bank and/or credit card company to see which banks in Rome if any are compatible and if there are any foreign transaction fees. For example, American Express or Visa can be used as credit in most places in Rome.

If you withdraw from a Bancomat (ATM), please keep in mind that many of them could charge an additional fee.

You can use International ATM Locator or Google Maps to locate ATM’s.
